We decided to take the 154 mile road up to Circle. It’s the final town on the road, ending at the Yukon River. The road is 40% paved, 60% gravel, and 20% non-existent! The 34 mile area between Central and Circle was by far the roughest road we’ve encountered. It was named Circle because the early settlers believed it was located on the Arctic Circle. However, it was 50 miles shy of that mark! The scenery was very nice. Notice the picture of the wildflowers that covered the hills! The area of the Lower Birch Creek Wayside was deserted, even though it was the 4th of July! We were the only ones in the lot. On the way up we noticed there was still an accumulation of snow in some of the ravines. We got into Circle after creating several new rattles in Gertie, but we were very disappointed that there was nothing open. There really wasn’t much that COULD be open, but still we were looking forward to having lunch at a café or something. We traveled around the little burg, stopped for a nap at the launch area into the Yukon, and started back down the same road we came in on. If anyone is planning on going, check first to find out how the road is. It’s worth going as far as Central, but we think we could have skipped Circle.
