ANIMAL RESEARCH STATION
We went to the LARS (Large Animal Research Station). They are doing research on the muskox, caribou and reindeer. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see the reindeer. They had been moved out to another area a few days earlier. It costs 9 bucks to have the tour. We did have a great guide for our visit. So many interesting things, but one I remember is that the caribou (and it’s near relative the reindeer) are the only ones that both male and females have antlers. Both sexes lose them each year, but the females keep theirs during the winter months to help them nose out the males when searching for food. Nature’s way of providing for the health of the mother and unborn. Main winter food was lichens, they dig away the snow to get to them. There was a small shop on the grounds if you needed more souvenirs! We’ve been pretty good about not getting into that cycle, but we did buy a couple of sweatshirts when we were at the gold mine.
